Deck staining in Ooltewah: new decks, done right the first time

Ooltewah has grown fast. That means a lot of new decks, and new wood has its own rules.

Don't stain new wood too soon

Fresh pressure-treated lumber is wet from the factory. Stain put on too early just sits on top and flakes. We use a simple water-drop test: if a few drops soak in within a few minutes, the wood is ready. If they bead up, we wait. Our article on new pressure-treated wood explains the timing.

…and don't wait too long

The other mistake is leaving it bare for years. Sun turns the surface gray and loosens the fibers, and then it has to be cleaned and brightened before it will take stain well. Somewhere in that first year is the sweet spot for most decks.

Start a maintenance plan on day one

A new deck is the cheapest one to keep nice. Put it on a maintenance plan after the first coat, and you may never pay for stripping.

Best time to book in Ooltewah

Same as the rest of the area: September and October are the sweet spot. The driest months here on average are October (3.59 in.) and August (3.67 in.)NOAA. Fall dates fill first, so get your photos in early. Why fall works best.

Local question

Asked in Ooltewah

My deck was built this spring. When should I stain it?

It depends on how wet the lumber was and how much sun it gets. Do the water-drop test, or send us a photo. For most new decks it's a matter of months, not years.
